EU Compliance
Application Bulletin No. EV970601
for
Compliance with EU Directive 89/336/EEC
Evergreen Systems is a manufacturer of industrial/military grade professional trackballs supporting a wide spectrum of applications. Our customer base ranges from private individuals to military installations, including a number of high reliability 'TEMPEST' applications. This application bulletin is in response to inquiries regarding our compliance with EU Directive 89/336/EEC, which involves product noise emissions and electrostatic discharge immunity.
General Compliance Requirements:
The provisions of the EU directive that are applicable to our trackball products are:
The Evergreen trackballs, WHEN PROPERLY INSTALLED, are suitable for operation in harsh electrical environments and will be compliant with EU directive 89/336/EEC and MIL STD 883 for both emissions and immunity.
The specific tests that our trackballs are in compliance with are:
For certain applications, specific models will meet MIL STD 461C Part 2-RE-02, radiated emissions standards.
Evergreen trackballs are designed to meet the above standards WHEN TESTED WITH A HOST COMPUTER, and the total installation, including the host computer, ARE TESTED AS A SYSTEM. This is necessary because the host computer supplies power to the trackball, and also provides the earth ground path for the trackball's shielded cable.
Test results are valid for a specific installation only, and pass/fail data is not transferable to any other combination. A block diagram of an acceptable installation for test is shown below.

To insure compliance with all of the above directives, Evergreen can provide trackballs with EMI/EMC compliant interface integrated circuits as well as UL recognized MOV protection devices for power lines. However, it is imperative that all paths to earth ground are firm and have the lowest impedance possible. Failure to provide adequate grounding may provide a lower resistance path through the data lines, resulting in a failure of both the trackball and the host.
Evergreen is prepared to assist in any such testing that may be conducted. The scope of our assistance being limited to email, Fax, and telephone consulting initiated by the testing party.
Evergreen does not consider it advisable to manufacture all of its products to meet these requirements, and only those units purchased for a specific application will be so manufactured. Contact the factory for specific ordering information.
